#1: Why is the Sky Blue?
1. The Wonder
Every day, above our heads, the sky glows blue. Not green.
Not violet. Not the white of the Sun itself. Why?
This question has fascinated humans for thousands of years.
Aristotle thought the blue was a reflection of the sea. Later thinkers
suggested it was some kind of “sky essence.” It took until the 19th century for
scientists to pin down the true cause: the scattering of sunlight by tiny
molecules in the atmosphere.
2. The Science (Accessible but Real)
White sunlight is a mixture of many colors. Each color
corresponds to a different wavelength of light: red waves are long, blue and
violet waves are short.
As sunlight passes through the atmosphere, air molecules
scatter the shorter wavelengths more strongly — a phenomenon now called Rayleigh
scattering. Though violet is actually scattered the most, our eyes are less
sensitive to violet and the Sun produces more blue than violet light. That’s
why the dome of heaven appears blue to us.
At sunset, when sunlight travels through more atmosphere,
the shorter waves scatter out of view, leaving the long reds and oranges to
paint the horizon.
