Old Is the Starlight We See Tonight?
1. The Wonder
Step outside on a clear night and look up. The stars you see
are not shining now. Their light began its journey years, centuries, or
even millennia ago. When you look at the night sky, you are looking into the
past — sometimes unimaginably far. The light of Sirius took 8 years to reach
us. The glow from the Andromeda galaxy left over 2 million years ago, before
humans existed as we do now. The starlight above your head is a time machine.
2. The Science (Accessible but Real)
Light travels fast — about 300,000 kilometers per second —
but space is vast. Distances between stars and galaxies are so great that even
at that incredible speed, photons take years to arrive.
- Light-years:
Astronomers measure distance by the time light takes to travel. One
light-year = the distance light covers in one year.
- The
nearest star (Proxima Centauri): ~4.2 light-years away. When you see
it, you see 2021’s light.
- Andromeda
Galaxy: 2.5 million light-years away — you see it as it was when early
humans were just beginning to shape tools.
- Distant
galaxies in Hubble’s Deep Field: their light has traveled over 13
billion years, nearly back to the beginning of the universe itself.
Thus, the night sky is both map and archive.
